2022 US Amateur Racquets Championship – Boston Tennis & Racquet Club
Boston was anxious to host the due-to-covid rescheduled US Amateur in Boston from Thursday, March 31st through Sunday, April 3rd. 26 players in all came and competed in the weekend. We had players from the UK, MTL, NY, RCOP and Boston represented.
The Stag dinner on Thursday evening, hosted 28 attendees and it was great to be in a beautiful room with so many racquets playing friends; it had been too long. Apres dinner, the players filed onto a private limo bus and headed to the local casino for games of chance and mischief.
Play kicked off in earnest on Friday morning where Boston was proud to have 4 new players to the game participating. Matches progressed throughout the day and the participants split up at night to a lovely Italian meal on the town, while some others went to the Celtics Game.
Saturday was a flurry of activity culminating with the semifinals matches during the all club cocktail party Saturday evening. We had a packed gallery for the first semi-finals doubles match of Messrs. Jonathan Larken & Toby Sawrey-Cookson versus Ivo Mcdonald and Henry Smith. The seasoned veterans did their best but ended up losing in the 5th game (15-12!) to the young Philadelphians.
Then we were on to the semi-finals singles matches of Bostonian David Tedeschi versus NARA President Jonathan Larken. Larken showed his skill by winning the match 3 to love with scores of 15-8/11/4. Following that match, the gallery was impressed with the other side of the draw whose semi-finalists were Peter Cipriano from NY and Henry Smith from Philadelphia. Peter showed again, why he is the best American amateur player and was able to pip Mr. Smith with scores of 15-2/2/0.
The second semifinals match was to be the final match before Sunday’s finals. Boston’s David Kohn and David Tedeschi (Their first appearance in a semifinals round in the US Amateur tournament) were to talk on Peter Cipriano and George Handy. Poor Peter had one partner test positive for COVID before the tournament, he went on to find another partner, only for him too to come down with Covid prior to the weekend. George Handy from NY answered the call and hopped on the first train out of NY to play with Peter. They were looking good, but the David’s from Boston were giving a good fight. Sadly, Peter rolled his ankle in the 2nd game and had to withdraw from the tournament. We wish him a speedy recovery.
With American All Start Peter Cipriano out of the tournament, Jonathan Larken was crowned 2022 US Amateur Racquets Singles Champion.
On the Sunday, over Bloody Mary’s and a grand brunch, the doubles final was set to take place. Ivo McDonald and Henry Smith versus David Kohn & Tedeschi from Boston. Despite a valiant effort from the Boston Boys, Mcdonald and Smith sailed to victory winning 15-4,2,6.
It was a fantastic weekend with full participation from the Host Club and the travelers alike both on and off the court. Boston looks forward to the next event already.
